It quickly became clear what I needed to do. It is well structured by going from easy just using autoconf to complex libtool and gradually building on the topics that it explained earlier.
I was able to do a non-trivial project from scratch after reading part of this book. I’ve always been interested in Linux and open source projects but haven’t had the time to pursue it much until my job required me to learn it.
You probably know how I feel about Autotools books given I actually wanted to write one, was mostly rejected, and ended up working on spare time on Autotools Mythbuster — which I really should write more on.

There are passing references to things outside the scope of the project, which are — annoyingly — bereft of syntax and examples.
My job now has me writing Linux programs I have an awesome job! I opened the makefile and was stunned to find that it was a confusing machine generated mess.
For instance, I really wanted to add an entire section, if not a chapter, on the differences between recursive and non-recursive make systems. The last chapter has a catalog of useful tips when creating your own autotools project.

This book is easy to read and follow for me, so I have a feeling that I understand the purpose of constructs and design decisions in many autotools based and gnome related projects. For instance, he goes into two important topics that I jonh only written about in the blog up until now — Position Independent Code and library versioning — and then provides a whole chapter dedicated to tip and tricks, not only tied to Autotools.
So, Well, as a result, I never even gave it a try. This makes the book easy to ready autootols to follow, but I would recommend to try out some of the chapters before moving to the next one to make sure you understand it well as the next chapter will assume you do: Disabling Undesirable Targets Item And good luck to the beginner who wants to find anything beyond a basic reference work online.
